PROTEIN POWDER, THE SCOOP

The Fitness Industry has been trending with protein powders for years! But we hear you asking: Should I add protein powder to your diet? Will it make me fat or bulk up? Will it make me fart?

LEAN Trainer Amy Fox answers all your questions.

The reason behind the creation of protein powders is the simplicity of being able to hit your protein target daily. Mix protein powder + water, and voila!

Why is protein so important?

Protein is essential for building and maintaining muscle, bone strength, cell repair, amongst many other body functions. Every cell in the human body contains protein. They’re basically the building blocks of life. Enough said!

How much protein is enough protein? Why is there a 'daily target'?

The average adult needs 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. 10-35% of your calories should come from protein. So, if you eat 2,000 calories per day, that's 200-700 calories from protein (50-175 grams). You’ll need more if you’re very active or trying to gain muscle, and it’s sometimes difficult to physically eat his amount of protein, hence protein powders exist.

Whey Protein vs Plant-Based (Vegan) Protein

If you are noticing protein is making you fart more regularly, it’s most probably the diary used in whey protein, and you may be dairy intolerant.

Personally, I do much better with vegan protein, but you’ll only know if you test this out yourself. Vegan protein does not contain any dairy sources. The lactose is replaced with plant-based alternatives, such as pea protein, which has all the same benefits, minus the farting. All LEAN Protein products are vegan!

Will protein powders make you fat?

The truth is that protein powders alone – or any other macronutrient including carbs and fats – will not make you put on weight.

The only thing that will make you fat is consuming more calories than you are burning. It’s always best to get your energy from nutrient-dense calories that will keep you fuelled up for the day ahead.

At the end of the day, you get to decide whether you want to add protein shakes into your diet. Protein shakes or not – just remember that you need fuel to give you energy and the right protein power might make a world of difference in your overall health!
